Assessing the Impact of COVID-19 on the FSM Economy

This EconMAP Technical Note utilizes current statistical data and macroeconomic modeling to project the impact of COVID-19 and to outline a range of fiscal measures for government consideration. The primary purpose of this document is to assist the government of the Federated States of Micronesia in developing its own fiscal response policies.

This EconMAP Economic Issue Paper explores the impact of COVID-19 on the economy of the Federated States of Micronesia, and the FSM's policy response to the pandemic. At the outset, the FSM took strong proactive measures to protect the health of the nation, and to-date has successfully avoided any cases of COVID-19. The paper begins with a brief overview of the economic performance and fiscal structure and of the FSM; details donor assistance and mitigation efforts in response to COVID-19; projects the short-term economic impact of the pandemic and likely fiscal recovery; and reviews economic and fiscal policies intended to support economic recovery and growth.
