The Road to Recovery: Further Updating the Economic Impact of COVID-19 and Strategies for Mitigation in the Republic of Palau

This update of an earlier EconMAP COVID impact assessment reviews of the impact of the COVID-19 global pandemic on the economy of Palau in FY20. It analyzes the various mitigation programs initiated by Palau with support from the Asian Development Bank and the and United States, together with their impact on household incomes. The Palau economy for FY21 is projected, when the full impact of the pandemic is realized, and following the implementation of the COVID-19 vaccination program.

In late March 2020, the EconMAP published a Technical Note entitled, “Assessing the Impact of COVID-19 on the Palauan Economy." This updated Technical Note benefits from the availability of additional data measuring the fiscal and economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Palau, as well as the experience of mitigating actions undertaken by the government of Palau and its major donors.

This Economic Monitoring and Analysis Program (EconMAP) Technical Note on Assessing the Impact of COVID-19 on the Marshall Islands Economy provided concise and timely analysis of the impact of COVID-19 on the RMI economy. The report highlights the need for a significant adjustment in the remainder of FY2020 and through FY2021, with a balanced approach of fiscal adjustment and financing through budgetary support. The report also suggests a need to adjust some of the recent rapid growth in specific areas of expenditures, and provides recommendations for a business relief program and public sector expenditure control program. The report was drafted by the Graduate School USA’s Pacific and Virgin Islands Training Initiatives (PITI-VITI) with funding support from the Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs.
